What the new NRCIA course covers
The new NRCIA course, Red Flags: When to Recommend an NRCIA LeakFREE® Roof Inspection and Certification, trains accredited members to read the signals a roof gives off long before a leak reaches a ceiling. It was filmed for the member training library and runs as a short structured module built around field decisions.
The subject is judgment. A member walks a property for a dozen different reasons: a listing, a claim, a maintenance call, a referral from a neighbor. This course covers the conditions that should move a member from a casual look to a full LeakFREE® Check.
The red flags the course works through
- Staining, blistering or sag on an interior ceiling, especially along a wall line
- Daylight, damp sheathing or compressed insulation in the attic
- Granule loss, lifted edges, split laps and failed sealant on the exterior surface
- Standing water, blocked drains and packed debris at the perimeter
- Penetrations: flashing, vents, skylights, curbs and solar mounts
Those groupings follow the five zones of a LeakFREE® Check: interior, attic, exterior, perimeter and rooftop. Members trained on the zones will recognize the structure immediately. What the course adds is the harder part to teach, which is knowing when a single flag is cosmetic and when three flags together describe a system that is losing.
How to explain a red flag to a client
Half the module is language. A homeowner who hears “you need a certification” hears a pitch. A homeowner who hears “there is staining at the north wall line and daylight above it in the attic, and those two together usually point to flashing” hears a finding. The course models the second version and gives members practice on wording that an agent, an adjuster or an attorney can use later without translating it.
The boundary that keeps a finding credible runs through the whole module. A red flag is an observation. A LeakFREE® Roof Certification is issued after a full inspection against published criteria, generated through InspectionPLUS®, and never promised before the work is done.
Who can take it and where it fits
The course sits in the member portal alongside the rest of the training library and is available to accredited members. It complements RoofGUARD™ and ForensicGUARD™ accreditation. Nothing in it changes the requirements for the NRCIA Certified Roof Inspector designation, or the inspection counts that carry a member to Senior at 500 and Master at 1,000.
NRCIA does not inspect roofs and does not issue certifications. We set the standard, we train and accredit the members who do that work, and we maintain the record of who holds which accreditation.
